Members present were President Rob Shadoin, Mr. Billy Abrahm, Mr. Otha Anders, Mr. Don Beasley, Ms. Lisa Best, Mr. Curtis Dowling, Ms. Mattie Harrison, Mr. Jim Kessler, Mr. George Mack, Mr. Joe Mitcham, Ms. Jo Tatum, and Mr. David Wright (arrived after the meeting began).
Mr. Rob Shadoin called the meeting to order and Mr. Anders gave the invocation. Mr. Shadoin led in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag and welcomed guests to the meeting.
Danny Bell, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, shared the first of two administrative recommendations which had precipitated the meeting, the naming of a principal at I. A. Lewis because of Mary Null’s recent promotion to Director of Elementary Education. Mr. Bell presented background information on the selection process. He reported that he chaired a Selection Committee for this position and for the Ruston Elementary School principal slot consisting of David Ferguson, Patrice Hay, Charles Owens, James Pilgreen, and Willie Washington who interviewed eleven, qualified applicants on July 14 and 15, 2003. He said that the committee unanimously recommended Dr. Fredrick Pinkney to Superintendent Charles Scriber for the position and it was Dr. Scriber’s recommendation to the Board that Dr. Pinkney be named principal at I. A. Lewis.
David Wright arrived during Mr. Bell’s presentation to the Board.
Following several questions, upon a motion by Mr. Mack, seconded by Ms. Harrison, the Board voted 11 For - 1 Against accepting the administration’s recommendation of Dr. Fredrick Pinkney for the position of principal of I. A. Lewis effective July 18, 2003. Voting against the motion was Jo Tatum.
Mr. Bell indicated that the same Selection Committee unanimously recommended Ms. Sonja Walker from the same pool of eleven applicants for the principal position at Ruston Elementary School. The opening was created when former principal, Eric Carter, was recently named Supervisor of Testing, Evaluation, and Curriculum. Superintendent Scriber concurred and recommended her to the Board.
Upon a motion by Ms. Tatum, seconded by Mr. Dowling, the Board unanimously voted to name Ms. Sonja Walker principal at Ruston Elementary effective July 18, 2003.
After brief comments and questions, having no further business to conduct, the Board adjourned at 12:25 p.m.
