REGULAR SESSION

Wednesday, December 18, 1991     12:00 Noon

 

 

The Lincoln Parish School Board met in Regular Session on Wednesday, December 18, 1991 at 12 o'clock noon at Ruston Junior High School.  Members present were: Mr. Allen Tuten, Dr. Phil Rice, Mrs. Loyace Braggs, Dr. Marty Beasley, Mr. George Mack, Mr. Andy Shealy, Mr. Jim Kessler, Mr. Wayne Barfield, Mr. Calvin Wilkerson, Ms. Ann M. Boyd, Mr. Paul Woodard, and Mr. David Wright.

 

Absent: None

 

Mr. Tuten called the meeting to order and gave the invocation.

 

Ms. Sandra Henderson, principal of Ruston Jr. High School, introduced Todd DeMoss, 8th grade student and president of the student council, to the board.  Following the introduction, Todd led the board in the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag, after which Dr. Cobb presented a certificate of appreciation to him on behalf of the Lincoln Parish School Board.

 

Mr. Tuten welcomed the guests and members of the staff and media who were present.

 

Ms. Henderson welcomed the board to Ruston Jr. High School.  She expressed her appreciation to the board for their support and indicated that she was proud to be a part of Ruston Jr. High School and the Lincoln Parish School System.  Ms. Henderson told the board that Ruston Jr. High School has a great group of teachers and staff who are dedicated and dependable as well as a great group of students and supportive parents.  She then pointed out some of the incentive programs for students that have been put into place such as student of the month, students grouped into categories and competing against each other, school spelling bee, literary magazine, school newspaper, Bearkit Bazaar and others.

 

Mr. Tuten thanked Ms. Henderson for hosting the meeting and for the excellent overview of some of the work being done at Ruston Jr. High School.

 

Upon a motion by Mr. George Mack, seconded by Ms. Ann M. Boyd, the board voted to approve the minutes of the Regular Session held on December 3, 1991.  Mrs. Brenda Theodos gave a brief update on the School Food Service Program as it relates to concerns and grievances recently expressed by the personnel.  She told the board that a meeting had been held with the School Food Service managers at which time a listing of concerns and grievances were reviewed as well as the response given by members of the supervisory staff of the central office.  Mrs. Theodos indicated that the managers said they would like to meet again and would be back in touch with the board at a later date.

 

Upon a motion by Ms. Ann M. Boyd, seconded by Mrs. Loyace Braggs, the board voted to adopt policy GBJA entitled Demotion, resulting from 1991 Louisiana Legislature involving Act 939. The board was required to adopt this policy by January 1, 1991.

 

Dr. Cobb asked Ron Suggs to give a brief overview of the recent Childrens' Opera, A Gift of Song, which was attended by 3100 Lincoln Parish students from grades 2-6.  Mr. Suggs reports that behavior was good from all schools and this was an excellent experience for all of the children.

 

Dr. Cobb indicated that the next board meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 1992.

 

Ms. Boyd shared with the board that parents are saying good things about our schools and she wanted to go on record to say "thank you" to the teachers and staff of our schools for the excellent job they are doing.

 

Mrs. Braggs spoke words of commendation to Mr. Tuten and indicated that she had enjoyed serving under him as he completes his fourth term as board president.

 

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 12:20 p.m., followed by a delicious Christmas meal enjoyed by the board in the school cafeteria.
